After spending half an hour wasting my time on an article claiming how to add custom images to my itunes album artwork that didn't work, I played around for a little while and came across the best method of importing custom images.

Now, this should work for everyone. But for the people who who run into trouble, I am running a Windows based laptop and Mozilla Firefox is my web browser of choice. It's a free download, so I recommend anyone not using it to give it a go.

Here is my example. My new Faith No More best of CD, Who Cares Alot? does not contain album artwork. Which is disappointing as Faith No More is awesome!

iTunes only finds images for albums sold in the iTunes shop. Which is damn annoying for perfectionists like me who hate scrolling through my albums to see this generic icon.

So I navigate to the offending album and then right click on it.

Then select Get Info.

You will see a dialog box asking if 'you are sure you want to edit information for multiple items?' Click on Yes.

This brings an information window. You can see on the far right there is a small Artwork box. Leave this window open and open your web browser.

Next step is finding the matching album's artwork.

I use Google Images to find this, but I search the site http://www.album-art.net/ which seems to filter out the crap images the Google lists.

As you can see above, I have simply typed who cares alot site:http://www.album-art.net/ in Google Images.

This searches just this site for images that match the phrase who cares alot and comes up with one result. With that taking away any decision making, freeing me to move onto the next step.

I load the full size image up in my browser (Firefox, remember that kids) and left click and hold dragging the image down to the open iTunes window on my start bar and not releasing until my mouse is in the middle of that Artwork box.

And then your done! A short but sweet hub, but they do say a picture is a 1000 words.

Say goodbye to those pesky generic icons and peace can be restored on your iPod!

Hopefully this has helped someone else that is as anally retentive as myself.
